Sports Massage – FAQs

Sports massage or deep tissue massage treatments are a particularly specialist form of massage . It is a massage which is suited to addressing muscular and postural problems and injuries. A sports massage can also alleviate the stress and tension which can build up in the body’s soft tissue during physical activity or just through activities in everyday life.

What problems can sports massage help?

Sports massage can help with many different concerns such as:

  • Persistent aches and pains
  • Tight muscles
  • Sports related injuries
  • Back, neck & shoulder pain
  • Muscle tension, pain & flexibility
  • Joint aches
  • Increase your range of motion
  • Posture correction
  • Sprains & strains
  • Back, neck & shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Repetitive strain injury (Tennis/Golfers elbow, Carpal Tunnel)

What are the benefits of sports massage?

Sports massage encourages blood flow and also pumps fluid around and through the lymphatic system which in turn will increase the supply of nutrients to the damages tissues and fibres which need it encouraging healing at a faster rate. The effects of a sports massage will increase the tissue elasticity and will break down scar tissue. Finally through sports massage we are able to create a localised stretch of muscle fibres. Proven benefits include;

  • Faster recovery from injuries
  • Removal of lactic acid build up
  • Reduce future injuries
  • Enhanced athletic performance
  • Restoration of flexibility and range of motion

Warmth and pressure of the massage will promote relaxation of the muscle fibres and connective tissue which will reduce pain, tension and will aid in the removal of the build up of toxins within the body. With the natural release of endorphins during your massage you will leave feeling much better.

Who is sports massage for?

Sports massage is not only for athletes or active sports people but for those whose jobs are physically demanding or for those whose posture maybe affected through their work, for example someone with a desk job or a driver.

People who lead busy and stressful lives will benefit from a sports massage as it will relieve the tension that has built up over time. It doesn’t matter what you do or whether or not you are sporty or are young or old, sports massage is suitable for the majority of people. We will help guide you to decide whether or not this is the right treatment for you.

Does Sports Massage hurt?

Sports massage can sometimes be a challenging treatment. It should not be overly painful and you and Ryan can agree on the degree of pressure and comfort. If a particular technique is too uncomfortable then Ryan will adapt your treatment for you.

Ryan is fantastic! Knowledgeable and friendly, with a real passion for helping people. I initially made an appointment due to reoccurring lower back pain - Ryan was able to not only relieve the pain, but also advise on movements and exercises to prevent it coming back in the future. I have also been to Ryan with sports injuries, including pulled muscles, knee/ankle pains, and muscle soreness. He is always able to provide some relief and recovery assistance, would definitely recommend!!

Ryan is very knowledgeable and insightful with a calm demeanour. He fixes my shoulders and back right up even if I'm stiff from a strenuous workout or sleeping wrong. He is easy to be around and accommodates if I have to move my times around a little. I feel very comfortable with him and I highly recommend. My back has certainly improved since going to him.

I’ve been going for therapy from Ryan for a while now I suffer with osteoarthritis down my spine knees shoulder and arthritis in my feet.. also anxiety. Ryan on the first consultation sat on the floor and showed me all the demonstrations, and how to sit and just breathe it seems so simple but actually calming breathing... as for treatment he’s been absolutely fantastic I wasn’t living a good quality of life before I met Ryan. The pain was just taking over my life, to the point I barely left the house.. this man has single Handley reduced my pain the massage and cupping has helped enormously my pain is reduced by 80 % with every 2 weekly appointments with him.. Ryan thank you so much for everything. Kindest regards Emma

Before visiting Ryan at McNeely Skin and Body I suffered with lower back and shoulder pain. After a couple of session I could feel a real difference, by combining massage with body positioning and using Ryan's exercises for posture I am now pain free and have more movement in all those areas. Due to the nature of my job I now visit on a monthly basis for regular maintenance. Ryan is very knowledgeable, the sessions are very relaxed and I always feel amazing afterwards. Highly recommended 🌟
